Buried in the Oct. 30 Washington Post was a bland headline: "Report Points to Faster Recovery in Jobs for Immigrants." 

The story, however, contained social dynamite that explains the rage of Americans who are smeared as nativists and xenophobes for demanding a timeout on immigration. 

In the April-May-June quarter, foreign-born workers in the U.S. gained 656,000 jobs. And native-born Americans lost 1.2 million. 

From July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010, foreign-born Hispanics gained 98,000 construction jobs. Native-born Hispanics lost 133,000. Black and white U.S. construction workers lost 511,000 jobs. 

According to the Center for Immigration Studies, from Jan. 1, 2000, to Jan. 1, 2010, 13.1 million immigrants, legal and illegal, entered the United States, a decade in which America lost 1 million jobs. 

From 2008 and 2009, the figures are startling. In 24 months, 2.4 million immigrants, legal and illegal, arrived, as U.S. citizens were losing 8.6 million jobs. 

Query: Why are we importing a million-plus workers a year when 17 million Americans can't find work? Whose country is this? 

Why do we not declare a moratorium on all immigration, until our unemployment rate falls to 6 or 5 percent? Charity begins at home. Ought we not take care of our own jobless first before we invite in strangers to take their jobs? 

According to the Pew Hispanic Center, each year between 300,000 and 400,000 "anchor babies" are born to illegal aliens. These newborns are entitled to citizenship, free health care and education, welfare and food stamps.

Their parents – almost all are poor or working-class – rarely pay any state or federal income tax.

Again, according to the Pew Center, the number of anchor babies here now is about 4 million. Add to that 3 million to 4 million born each decade, and it will not be long before Colorado, Nevada, Arizona and Texas resemble California, which is on the brink of default. 

If no action is taken, the Republican Party will soon be unable, even in wave elections, to win the presidency, as it won nothing and indeed lost state legislative seats in California in 2010. 

The border will disappear, and America will be a geographical expression, not a country anymore. 

Legal scholar William Quirk describes a new phenomenon in the invasion of America: "maternity tourism." Though the nation has awakened to the threat to social cohesion and national solvency, Harry Reid is still attempting to ram through a lame-duck Senate an amnesty for illegal aliens up to age 30 who claim they were brought here before they were 16, have a high school diploma or GED and state that they intend to go to college within six years. 

An estimated 2.1 million illegal aliens would be amnestied, put on a path to citizenship, and be eligible for student loans and more. 

According to Alabama's Jeff Sessions, ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee: 

"Aliens granted amnesty by the Dream Act will have the legal right to petition for entry of their family members, including their adult brothers and sisters and the parents who illegally brought or sent them to the United States, once they become naturalized U.S. citizens. In less than a decade, this reality could easily double or triple the 2.1 million green cards that will be immediately distributed as a result of the Dream Act." 

Lawbreaking would be rewarded. Chain migration would continue. A permanent powerful magnet would be provided to all foreigners to sneak into the United States and be sure to bring the kids. 

As Rep. Dana Rohrabacher argues, one effect of the Dream Act will be to move illegals applying to college ahead of many Americans, as 80 percent of illegals are Hispanics and eligible for affirmative action. 

U.S. soldiers coming home from Afghanistan will "sit in back," as Obama puts it, when competing against amnestied illegals. 

Several days ago, UCLA's Kent Wong addressed a pro-amnesty rally in Los Angeles' MacArthur Park. Wong turned the race card face up. 

When Reid's bill passes, said Wong, "the young people of the Dream Act movement will go on to accomplish and do great things. ... You will go on to become lawyers, teachers, doctors and members of the U.S. Congress to replace those old white men. ..." 

If the Dream Act passes, Wong is right about whose time has come and gone. May the tea party take names at the call of the roll.

Mestizo sentenced to life plus 20 to 40 years for rape of 5 yo girl.

SCRANTON - A Taylor man who pleaded no contest to raping a 5-year-old girl was sentenced today to life plus 20 to 40 years in prisonby Lackawanna County Judge Michael Barrasse.
Felix E. Montoya, of 270 Tamworth Drive, was charged with raping a child and causing serious injuries, aggravated assault and burglary.
 The mandatory minimum sentence for the crimes was 15 years, but prosecutors sought a life sentence.
 In sentencing Mr. Montoya before a packed courtroom, Judge Barrasse referred to a letter Mr. Montoya wrote in which he described the brutal rape as a "big mistake."
"It was more than a mistake," the judge said. "It was a heinous and brutal crime."
Mr. Montoya slipped into the girl's bedroom after showing up at an Independence Day picnic thrown by the girl's family in their yard. Although unknown to the family, Mr. Montoya attended as a friend of a friend.
The girl went to bed about 10:30 p.m. At 2 a.m. Sunday, her parents began to clean up and checked on their children, only to find the victim's door locked. The mother knocked on the door and after a few moments, the girl opened it and ran out, her face red and swollen and her underwear on backward.
Mr. Montoya was found under a bed wearing only tennis shoes and a T-shirt, police said. The father entered the room and cornered the man until police arrived.
The girl was treated at a hospital for injuries to her face and head, bite marks on her thigh and shoulder and severe rape-related injuries, police said.

AIDS among Latinos the next health crisis

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. — AIDS rates in the nation’s Latino community are increasing and, with little notice, have reached what experts are calling a simmering public health crisis.
Though Hispanics comprise about 14 percent of the U.S. population, they represented 22 percent of new HIV and AIDS diagnoses tallied by federal officials in 2006. According to a survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation, Hispanics in Washington, D.C., have the highest rate of new AIDS cases in the country.
So far, the toll of AIDS in the nation’s largest and fastest growing minority population has mostly been overshadowed by the epidemic among African Americans and gay white men. Yet in major U.S. cities, as many as 1 in 4 gay Hispanic men has HIV, a rate on par with sub-Saharan Africa.
Blacks still have the highest HIV rates in the country, but language difficulties, cultural barriers and, in many cases, issues of legal status make the threat in the Hispanic community unique. For those who arrived illegally, in particular, fear of arrest and deportation presents a daunting obstacle to seeking diagnosis and treatment.
“Officials need to stop downplaying or ignoring what’s happening among Latinos,” said Oscar De La O, president of Bienestar, a Latino service organization. “We are at the center of the storm.”
Even with the United States embroiled in a fierce debate over immigration policy, the problem of AIDS in Latinos had received scant attention from political and public health officials. At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where only 2 of 17 approved HIV programs target Hispanic Americans, officials have added Spanish-language hotlines, confidential testing sites and other initiatives aimed at filling the gap.
“Hispanics are overrepresented in this epidemic, and we need to target our efforts to them,” CDC epidemiologist Kenneth Dominguez said in an interview.
Officials do not have a precise tally of HIV infection nationwide, because many states have not reported figures to the CDC. The 22 percent, a figure that has not been previously released, includes 33 states and Puerto Rico, but not California, where more than 37 percent of the population is Hispanic.
“You combine the economic pressures, loneliness and immigration worries, and it pushes these individuals to be a hidden population,” said Frank Galvan, of the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles.
The consequences, however, go well beyond the Hispanic community. If the United States does not begin to “make a dent” in the swelling crisis of HIV among Hispanics, Galvan said, “it will continue to spread to other populations.”
The nexus of AIDS and migration — the reality that viruses know no borders — will gain fresh prominence at the International AIDS Conference next month in Mexico City. It is a nexus that plays out in dramatic fashion in San Ysidro and other communities along the U.S.-Mexican border, where the tensions associated with immigration tend to exacerbate an already stigmatized illness.
“Migrants tend to be lonely, separated from their family or partners,” Dominguez said. “They do not have health insurance. They may turn to drugs or alcohol. All of these put a migrant at higher risk.”
Mauro Ruiz’s story fit that profile.
Growing up gay in Mexico, the 35-year old felt the pain of his family’s shame. He fled north of the border, as many do, in search of a better life. There, he thought, he could live openly and thrive.
Unleashed from the stigma that cloaks homosexuality in Mexico’s conservative, machismo culture, Ruiz sought refuge in San Diego’s gay bars and bathhouses. There, he discovered friendly American men and crystal methamphetamine.
“I had no idea meth was so addictive,” he said. “It takes away your inhibitions. I started associating with people I wouldn’t normally.”
It was not long before Ruiz contracted HIV. Like many Latinos, his disease had nearly reached full-blown AIDS before it was diagnosed. “I was scared as hell, really, really afraid,” he said in a near-whisper.

When English and French-Canadian fur trappers first grew acquainted with the cultures of the Native Americans among whom they found themselves, they were surprised to find that there were significant numbers of men dressed as women among the tribes of the region. What intrigued them the most, however, was the esteem with which these men were held by their fellow tribesmen. These men were considered to be spiritually gifted, a special gift to the tribe by God, men with a particular insight into spiritual matters. As they were encountered in most tribes, the trappers chose a French word to describe them all: "berdache."
Personally, as a person of Native American descent, I thoroughly dislike that term, for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that it is ultimately perjorative in its roots. Native Americans find the term offensive as it comes ultimately from the Arabic where it means roughly, 'male prostitute,' a thoroughly unacceptable term to be used for their highly respected spiritual advisors and elders.
The term "Two-Spirit" has been proposed as a replacement, but I find that it too is lacking, in that there is no universal agreement on its meanings, some of which are also perjorative. Yet what it does convey is a sense that these people have a special gift - being in two worlds at once, the normal material world, but also an sensitivity to a special gift of the spirit that only people like themselves can experience.
Other terms also fail to convey the breadth of the phenomenon and the esteem in which these men were held. While men living as men with other men were a phenomenon that varied widely among tribes, the phenomenon of the man dressed as a woman who engaged in the pursuit of spiritual matters was almost universal among North American tribes. The term, "Two-Spirit" is a term I will use, then, to describe this phenomenon in this section of this essay, in spite of its shortcomings.
There were exceptions, of course, to the celebration of Two-Spirits, such as the Pimas of Arizona, but in most cases, Native American tribes, particularly the tribes of the Great Plains and the Southwest, were greatly admiring of their Two-Spirits. Among the Hopi and the Zuni of Arizona and New Mexico, these Two-Spirits held a special status. They were keepers of the ancient traditional stories of creation, healing and growth. But more than that, they were the keepers of the spiritual traditions, recognized for their special gift of being "between genders."
